BOOK TWO

AMBER-EYED MAN

To Mary Bruza—because she is my sister and I love her.

CHAPTER ONE

A SOFT BREEZE caressed Meredith Moore as she gazed from the bedroom window out into the velvet dark of the Mexican night. Carrying with it exotic sounds and scents, it coolly bathed her face and gently lifted her pale, shoulder-length blonde hair. She drew in her breath at the sight of the white fuscia and gardenia blossoms, glowing in the light of hanging lanterns, a border for the cobbled courtyard below. In the center, she could just make out a graceful mountain silhouetted against the darkening sky. As tired as she was from her journey, she could have looked out onto that scene forever, so different was it from everything she’d ever known. With an effort, she turned to finish unpacking the last of her suitcases.

Here again beauty greeted her. Softly lit by a pink-shaded lamp beside the bed, the room boasted deep rose bedcovers, matched by the drapes at the windows. When she moved toward the white dresser, painted with intricate gold designs on its curved front, her shoes sank deep into the soft white carpet. She soon found that the splendor of the bedroom was more than equaled by that of the attached bath. Eager to soak away the grime and fatigue of the long day, Meredith entered the turquoise and white room, and gasped with pleasure at the sight of the enormous tub, the glass-enclosed shower, the plush, fluffy bath towels hanging on gold bars and the bowls of tangy smelling salts and potpourri lining the marble top of the vanity.

After turning on the gleaming brass taps, Meredith scattered a cloud of bath crystals into the steaming cascade of water. As the haunting, seductive fragrance enveloped her, she settled gracefully into the tub, a smile on her generous lips. Perfect, she thought, just what the doctor ordered. Her immediate cares slipped away, and for the moment she could concentrate on relaxing—and could forget what had brought her to the secluded Mexican villa of Ward Sanderson, a man she did not even know.

The warm water of the bath lulled her, and Meredith forced herself to leave its comfort while she still had the energy to do so. She patted herself dry with a lamb-soft towel and returned to her room, her bare toes luxuriating in the rich carpet. Her hair, now a little damp, framed a heart-shaped face delicately and faintly sprinkled with freckles. An appealing face, with its straight nose, wide, generous mouth, and startlingly blue eyes, it seemed even more so now that her skin glowed like pale honey.

Lifting her hair with both hands, she piled it on top of her head and studied her reflection in the mirror. She didn’t look one day older than twenty-five, though recently she’d felt at least one hundred. Meredith did notice, though, that wearing her hair up emphasized her slenderness and made her look younger. Abruptly she let the golden locks fall and turned to the bed to pick up her skirt and blouse.
